A rare and highly valued medicinal mushroom, Meshima — known botanically as Phellinus linteus — takes its Japanese name from "Women's Island" (Meshima Island), where it was traditionally collected. In Korean traditional medicine it is called "Sang Hwang," and it has been one of the most extensively researched medicinal mushrooms in Korean and Japanese pharmacology for decades. Growing slowly on mulberry trees, Meshima is distinguished by its hard, woody texture and golden-brown colour.
