Its Chinese name "Huang Qi" (黄芪) translates to "Yellow Leader," reflecting both the golden colour of the root and its esteemed status as a primary Qi tonic in classical Chinese herbalism. Astragalus is classified as a "superior" herb in the Shennong Ben Cao Jing, one of the oldest Chinese pharmacopoeias.
